"Seeking “family recognition” rights through marriage, therefore, means seeking such rights only for queer and trans people who can actually expect to be protected by that institution. Since the availability of marriage does not protect straight people of color, poor people, prisoners, or people with disabilities from having their families torn apart by child welfare systems, it is unlikely to do so for queer poor people, queer people of color, queer prisoners, and queer people with disabilities. The quest for marriage seems to have far fewer benefits, then, for queers whose families are targets of state violence and who have no spousal access to health care or immigration status, and seems to primarily benefit those whose race, class, immigration, and ability privilege would allow them to increase their wellbeing by incorporation into the government’s privileged relationship status. The framing of marriage as the most essential legal need of queer people, and as the method through which queer people can obtain key benefits in many realms, ignores how race, class, ability, indigeneity, and immigration status determine access to those benefits and reduces the gay rights agenda to a project of restoring race, class, ability, and immigration status privilege to the most privileged gays and lesbians."

Greetings Tumblr World.
This is a message written by MC, Leo’s domestic partner. I’d like to share with you all something difficult. Leo committed suicide two weeks ago and is no longer with us. I’m sorry to have to share this with you. I think it is important for me to share with you the circumstances surrounding his death because suicide has a stigma associated with it. I’ll always be pained by the manner of his conclusion, but I will never be ashamed of him. I’m so proud to have spent four years knowing him and evolving together. We grew stronger together and I’ve been using that strength to carry me now. When we began our journey together we promised each other one thing- “to try.”
And he did try very hard and I thank him for that.
I want to thank you all. Leo took solace in the world in Tumblr because it was a home to express his gender identity and the journey that was its exploration. Community is essential, and to Leo, Tumblr was one of his communities. Certainly as a Tumblr follower you were privy to a very private part of his expression and to the exhibitionist that he was. In his day-to-day, he was far more quiet. He was so compassionate and generous with his spirit. He was also so silly and wonderful. I was lucky enough to share four years of my life as his partner. Let you find peace.
Please take care of yourself and those around you. It is infuriating that I’m sure many of you have already been impacted in same way by suicide before and unfortunately will again in the future. Silence is deadly, so please remember to speak.

If you are in a crisis please contact Hopeline (800) SUI-CIDE or https://www.imalive.org for a crisis intervention and suicide prevention hotline that is 24/7.
Thank you to Amos Mac for the above photo.

I find all the “cis-hating” declarations super fucking offensive.

And don’t tell me I’m not “the intended audience.”  As a cis follower of the queer tumblrs posting it, how am I NOT the intended audience?

Stop making blanket declarations that cis folk are the enemies of queer folk.  Not only are not all cis-identified people anti-queer (queers have cis allies), many queers are both cis and queer.

I’m queer, I’m cis, and I’m sick of “radical” queer politics.  You aren’t radical, you’re separatists.  Radical is rejecting selfish extremist politics and working for what’s right for all people.  Mutual respect is radical.  Hatred is not.

distinction without difference: why i’m rethinking my queer identity

Queer is your get out of gay free card.

There is – or should be – room for queer feminism outside the walls of the ivory tower. And academic queerness should be taking its cues from the outside – not trying to force its privileged nouvelle definition(s) of queerness on queers.

I will not call myself queer for the sake of not calling myself gay. Let me say that again: I will not call myself queer for the sake of not calling myself gay.

“When ‘Harry Leon Crawford’, hotel cleaner of Stanmore was arrested and charged with wife murder he was revealed to be in fact Eugeni Falleni, a woman and mother, who had been passing as a man since 1899. In 1914, as ‘Harry Crawford’, Falleni had married the widow Annie Birkett. Three years later, shortly after she announced to a relative that she had found out ‘something amazing about Harry’, Birkett disappeared.”
Though this is the only female/lesbian/cross-dressing mugshot, the collection is wonderful. Such amazing characters.
